In the movie “Schindlers List” I saw in a room full of suitcases in the death camp of Auschwitz, one suitcase with my surname of Sonnenschein written in big letters on it. This gave me the “jolt” to open up and tell my experience as a Holocaust survivor. After being canvassed to join Courage to Care, I joined this very dedicated group of people.
When Nazi Germany attacked Yugoslavia I was ten and a half years old. I saw terrible atrocities. This affected me greatly. I moved to many countries to survive. The will to live is so strong, that it is difficult to describe. It made me also determined to succeed later in life.
I had many narrow escapes and am lucky to be alive, thanks to people who had courage to care and endangered their and their families’ lives, to help us.
